KENYA | Chyulu Hills - "The Green Hills Of Africa"

Chyulu Hills also known as “The Green Hills of Africa” is one of the beautiful destinations in Kenya, it is located 180 kilometers on the southeast side of Nairobi, it is relatively an unknown area of stunning highland terrain that sits between the flatlands of Amboseli and Tsavo West, 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Kilimanjaro, which provides a scenic background on clear days. The Chyulu Hills are undoubtedly odd, with their characteristic rounded hills and volcanic vents with hardened black lava flow pouring down at random intervals.

Chyulu hills national park is a beautiful landscape having emerald green hills, crystal clear water, denser forest, and volcanic scenery, A heavily wooded environment and more spectacular rock-studded hills and mountains surround the Chyulu Hills, providing shelter for a diverse range of animal species including elephant, lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, and reedbuck., and around 250 species of birds.

If you're looking for reptiles, the most frequent species in the region are the black mamba, puff adder, rock python, gecko's, tortoises, and lizards. You'll also witness a variety of butterflies, dung beetles, and, sadly, tsetse flies!

Volcanic vents, deep ash craters, and dark lava flow interrupt the rounded domes, while valleys of lush green forest stretch between the hills to produce a breathtaking scene, backed by jaw-dropping vistas of Kilimanjaro in the distance. Although the lava flows are sparsely vegetated, 37 different orchid species are found on higher slopes. A catacomb of mainly undiscovered caves lies deep under the hills.

This place can be visited throughout the year, but it is recommended to go there in dry seasons from June to October and January to February because the roads are bumpy and their condition isn’t great at all, it becomes quite challenging for you to visit Chyulu hills in the rainy season.

The backdrop is breathtaking, with soft, rounded hills folding into black rivers of solidified lava, offering excellent homes for the impala and eland observed gathering amid the rocky outcrops.
