2 September, 2021

Recollections of family vacations will always hold close to the heart because it is time well spent with the people you love the most. Despite the challenges that come with travelling with kids, Uganda is a very child friendly place.

The numerous great national parks and water-based activities mean that Uganda can be a lot of fun for children. In this blog post, TRAFEKA brings you a list of top things to do with kids in Uganda;

1. Visit The Gaddafi National Mosque

Prominently known as the "Gaddafi Mosque", the vibrant structure with its brilliant features of Art was built and designed based on a blend of Cultures of Arab, European, and an African Touch.

Constructed on Old Kampala Hill, one of Kampala City's Seven Hills, the Mosque can be viewed from all Corners of Kampala and one cannot go without a glimpse of it. The National Mosque is open to everyone regardless of their faith, Political associations, racial backgrounds, Cultures and Nationalities.

The Mosque Complex comprises a Large Mosque Hall that is usually open to all Muslims for Friday Prayers, Islamic Festivals and can house over 35,000 People, making it one of the biggest Mosque in East, Central, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Climbing the Tower of the Mosque will give you the best view of Kampala City at 360 degrees with its original surrounding Seven Hills. The Mosque also stands in the unique spot where the British first raised their Flag which indicated Uganda as a British Colony. TRAFEKA will help arrange your visit to this grand work of art.

2. Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre

Located 15 minutes from Entebbe International Airport - 36 kilometers from Uganda's capital Kampala, the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (Entebbe Zoo) cares for rescued animals, often victims of bush meat trade, habitat destruction, or illegal trade. Animals that can make it in the wild are released back. The center doesn’t buy animals nor use them for entertainment, but rather as ambassadors to help save and maintain those in the wild. As a visitor at the center, you can sign up as an animal surrogate mother for a day, participate in behind the scene experiences or simply spend a night in their hostel or African cottages as you await your flight or meeting!

3. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Bounded by the calm waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary houses up to 49 orphaned chimps rescued from all over Uganda. This Island facility offers both day and overnight trips, providing a special opportunity to closely watch and relate with these enthralling great apes in this exclusive setting. TRAFEKA will help organize your family trip to the Island.

4. Source of the Nile - Speke Monument

This is the real, original Source of the Nile Site, where the British Explorer Speke first discovered the River Nile (of course the locals here knew there was a river). On this tour, you will stand exactly where he stood, take photos with the monument, take a boat ride across the River Nile and into Lake Victoria, watch monkeys, monitor lizards, pythons (and maybe even an authentic African Witchdoctor). The site also provides space for camping, nature walks, parties and occasions with such an impressive nature setting - ideal for Bird watching and anyone looking for a 1 day tour in the Ugandan Countryside.

5. Visit the National Parks

Uganda is gifted with 10 National Parks, under the management of Uganda Wildlife Authority, (UWA).

The ten National Parks include; Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, Kibale, Mount Elgon, Rwenzori Mountains, Semuliki, Mgahinga Gorilla and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks. These parks exhibit the best in East Africa. Their Rift Valley scenery and tropical forests make dramatic backdrops to a broad variety of flora and fauna.

The parks present ‘traditional’ savanna safaris along with boat tours, forest hikes, mountain climbing and wildlife research activities. Uganda happens to be the best bird-watching destination in Africa with over 1,000 species of birds – many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. It also houses up to 13 types of primates including over half of the world’s endangered Mountain Gorillas; and our closest relative – the chimpanzee.

A tour in the parks will give you an opportunity to; Explore the wild Kidepo Valley; spot Queen Elizabeth’s tree-climbing lions; trek up the Virunga Volcanoes; summit the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains; take on Bwindi’s “impenetrable forest”; learn ancient tribal traditions and crafts – or just relax at your lodge surrounded by the amazing sights and sounds of Africa’s most hospitable destination.
