TOURIST VISA | The East Africa Tourist Visa for multiple entries into Uganda, Kenya & Rwanda

Traveling to East Africa before was a bit challenging, especially if you wanted to visit the whole region. Now, it has been made possible in an inexpensive way, thanks to the introduction of the East African tourist visa.

The East Africa Tourist Visa is a single entry visa for travelers from foreign Countries, visiting Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda at the same time. While it is multi-entry within the three countries; this visa automatically expires when a traveler goes outside territory or the three (3) countries.

Though Tanzania has not yet joined this initiative, as long as tourists acquire this visa, they can now travel easily to Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. So, if an East African Safari has been on your bucket-list as soon as borders re-open post-covid, grab yourself a tourist visa to ease access when traveling. 

This East African visa is as a result of a joint initiative by the Heads of States of the respective partner countries to enhance regional travel and create prospects for travelers to discover the diversity of East Africa.

The application may be made prior to the intended date of travel or on arrival at the first port or entry into Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda where applicable. The East Africa Tourist Visa | How to Apply:

  1. Applying for an East Africa Tourist Visa may be either; made manually or done online by submitting a form called; EATV (Form 1.)
  2. You can choose to apply before your travel dates or apply on arrival at the first port or entry into East Africa (Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda) where applicable. You can also submit your application at any of the diplomatic representations of the Republic of Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda, at the Immigration Offices of the respective countries or online where applicable.

Acquiring the tourist visa in Uganda

If Uganda is the first country of your visit to East Africa, you can find information on the visa application process on the consular section of your local Uganda Embassy’s website. The process is inexpensive since it does not involve filling in forms online or mailing fees and definitely no passport photo. Do not forget the yellow fever card though, as it is a requirement.

Acquiring the tourist visa in Kenya

If you are beginning your journey in Kenya, the information is available on the visa application process on the consular section of your local Kenya embassy’s website.

Please note that owning the East African tourist visa does not give you free access to Kenya as you will need other documents as required by the authorities.

Acquiring the tourist visa in Rwanda

And if you are going to start your trip in Rwanda, then you will need to apply through the Rwanda Online Visa Application System. Please note that although some countries like Switzerland had been exempted from paying for a tourist visa, it is now mandatory for everyone to pay before they get into Rwanda.

Lastly, every application for an East Africa Tourist Visa shall be accompanied with the East Africa Tourist Visa fee of one hundred United States Dollars (100 USD) or its equivalent.

The East African tourist visa: Eligibility and the type of visa

A traveler from a foreign Country who wants to visit East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda) at the same time for tourism purposes is eligible for the East Africa Tourist Visa. You will obtain the visa through any of the diplomatic representations of Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, at the immigration offices of the respective countries or on-line where applicable. 

Type of visa: An East Africa Tourist Visa is multiple entry; (within the three East African countries) visa and shall be valid for 90 days. 

The Expatriates/ Foreign Residents

Expatriates or foreign residents in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda have a special consideration. They don’t need a visa anymore to visit any of the three countries of Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda. They can now obtain an Inter-State Pass which is applicable for 6 months.

Additionally, expatriates will require a valid resident / work permit, on top of the requirements listed above for the East Africa Tourist Visa.
