2 September, 2021

Popular for its breathtaking scenery, Rwanda is often referred to as “le pays des mille collines” (French for “Land of a thousand hills”), with a number of sights and sounds to experience for travelers. It is a landlocked country lying South of the Equator, in East-Central Africa. You need to be prepared for your trip to Rwanda, which is why we have put together a list of essentials for you to put into consideration, with our safe travel guide;

1. Travel Documents

Just like any other country in East Africa, a valid passport and travel visa are mandatory to almost everyone visiting Rwanda. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is also essential. All visitors should take malaria prophylactic drugs and vaccination for Malaria should be taken prior to travel in order to avoid inconveniences. Travelers are also advised to take their personal insurance before traveling to the Country. Speak to us, our experienced travel experts will advise you on safe travel requirements.

2. Getting around safely

Rwanda has a well-established and dependable bus network between major cities, towns and neighboring countries. You can use the Minibuses as they are the common form of public transport around the capital, Kigali and to other major towns. As a visitor, we advise that you buy your bus tickets directly from the bus company counters if you plan to move around Rwanda by bus. We can also book your bus tickets with us to avoid being conned by scammers and touts hanging around the transport terminals.

3. Plastic Bags

The Rwanda government banned all non-biodegradable polyethylene plastic bags in 2008. When you get into the country, you will notice large inscriptions at the airport warning travelers about luggage searches for polythene bags. The penalty for offenders found with plastic bags is a fine of 50,000 Rwanda Francs (US$61) or you could even get jailed depending on the seriousness of the offense. Hence, the one thing you will notice while traveling around, is how clean the country is! Be a responsible guest and ditch the plastic bags.
